Developing Skills for the Future Workforce

Staff Perspective Rosa Torpis

We are currently recruiting two intern positions to join us part-time from November 2017 through May 2018. The Healthy Economy Intern will help our staff with researching and developing strategies to maximize opportunity for those facing economic barriers in San Mateo County. The Healthy Neighborhoods Intern will be researching and developing strategies to increase active transportation options for all San Mateo County residents. Application packets are due 9/8!

We see this paid internship opportunity as a mutual benefit for both GHSMC, as well as the graduate students. While Get Healthy San Mateo County benefits from the interns’ fresh ideas and new perspectives, the interns gain real work experience in the health equity field in a supportive learning environment. We offer an intern brown bag speaker series to share different department perspectives featuring division directors, their programs and their career paths. In addition, our internship program provides interns with the opportunity to build a robust network of public health professionals working across issue areas.

Part of the recruitment process includes finding graduate level college students or newly graduate alumni with a deep passion for working on addressing health inequities or with personal experience dealing with inequitable economic, social, health and educational systems and environments. Please help us spread the word among your networks!

Evaluations collected from our past interns indicate our interns have enjoyed their experience working with Get Healthy SMC and the Health Policy and Planning Program. Some have asked to stay longer than their terms while others have been invited back to work on special projects. One of our newest team members, Heather Arata, community health planner, was a former Summer intern. She commented regarding her internship opportunity: “I was able to begin applying everything I was learning in my class lectures. This also gave me a chance to see if policy is the right work for me. It turns out it was a great fit!” – Heather Arata

The HPP internship is year- round. We have open recruitment of candidates in the Summer for the Fall-Spring part-time internship opportunity. And we also recruit candidates in the Winter for the Summer full-time internship opportunity.

We invite you to share this opportunity with your networks. http://www.smchealth.org/health-policy-planning-internships
