On January 24, 2019 the San Mateo County Home for All initiative hosted the first of three convenings planned for 2019. This event brought together County agencies, city staff, businesses, and nonprofits to discuss best practices for community engagement and findings from the recent pilot projects. These pilot projects were funded by the County in four cities, Redwood City, Portola Valley, Half-Moon Bay, and Burlingame. While the cities presented on their challenges and success with community engagement on various housing projects, the keynote speaker, Sterling Speirn, spoke about community engagement and democracy. Here Sterling encouraged people to engage with people who have different views to learn from one another and find solutions that benefit everyone.
