Access to High Quality Preschool Programs Benefit Us All

Post

While the research is well established that high quality early childhood education improves immediate academic outcomes in elementary school, new research highlights the benefits of high quality early childhood education across the lifespan of an individual. By looking at the long-term effects of high-quality early childhood education on disadvantaged kids, professor of economics, James Heckman found a 13% return on investment per year on high-quality preschool programs. The returns are primarily due to improved labor productivity of those who had access to high-quality preschool programs, which make them less likely to rely on welfare services.  This research further highlights the need for increased investments in early childhood education. Fortunately, San Mateo County’s Big Lift Initiative is leading the way to ensure that all children in San Mateo County have access to high quality early childhood education.
