SMC Youth Commission Adopts Indigenous People’s Day Resolution

Post

With the intent to acknowledge the contributions of and the historical injustices suffered by Native American communities, the SMC Youth Commission adopted a resolution and a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors to recognize the second Monday of October as Indigenous People’s Day instead of Columbus Day, which is the current name of the Federal holiday. In the same resolution, the SMCYC recommended to recognize October 12 as Italian-American Heritage Day to commemorate the contributions of the Italian-American communities to our county.  This resolution, that originated in the Immigration Committee of the Youth Commission, is a testament of the commissioner’s commitment to make San Mateo County more inclusive and representative of all the communities that get to call this county home. Strengthening the sense of belonging of all communities is important for the health and well-being of our county residents.
