Anxiety in Teens is on the Rise

Post

Educators across the country are seeing a rise in anxiety among teens. While it is not clear what is causing this increase, preliminary research suggests a connection to the increase in the amount of screen time. The most recent data shows that 20% of 7th graders, 23% of 9th graders, and 29% of 11th graders felt hopeless and sad for more than two weeks. Additionally, 12% of 9th graders and 13% of 11th graders reported seriously contemplating suicide. This data is alarming! The San Mateo County Office of Education and San Mateo County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services are collaborating to host regional mental health collaboratives that identify local issues and determine best practices to support students. Restorative Justice Practice supports school connectedness, which has been shown to reduce stress among students.
