- Aug. 1 to Sept. 30 - The Great Race for Clean Air, sponsored by Commute.org, is a friendly competition between employers to encourage employees to use commute alternatives to solo driving such as ridesharing, carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking or riding transit. These commute alternatives provide significant CO2 greenhouse gas emissions savings over solo driving. All employees who log their commute online are entered into weekly random drawings. At the end of the Great Race, employers with the highest CO2 savings (that is, the average CO2 saved per employee in your organization) and employers with the highest employee participation are the winners. Winners will be declared in each county and Bay Area-wide. Register here.

- Sept. 13, 4:30-6 p.m. - The next Get Healthy San Mateo County Task Force meeting and launch of the 2010-2015 Strategies for Improving Food and Physical Activity Environments in San Mateo County document. - Sept. 17 - Plant It, Grow It, Eat It: Garden-Enhanced Nutrition Education - Make the connection from seed to table in this fun and delicious one-day workshop at Life Lab's amazing Garden Classroom in Santa Cruz, CA. Explore ways to teach nutrition through gardening, harvesting and meal preparation in Life Lab's Garden Kitchen. You'll learn effective ways to encourage kids grades 2-8 to eat more fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy lifestyle. Participants will sample the bounty of the farm and harvest to prepare nutritious snacks. - Sept. 30- Oct. 1 - The Growing Classroom: An Introduction to Garden Based Learning is a two-day workshop, located at Life Lab's amazing Garden Classroom in Santa Cruz, CA, is ideal for those interested in supplementing their existing science program with garden-based learning. Using The Growing Classroom activity guide for grades 2-6, you'll experience hands-on activities, learn basic science concepts and gardening techniques, and develop management strategies for a school gardening program. Find out how to teach the standards while you guide students through the natural cycles of the garden. You'll receive Life Lab's 480 page book, The Growing Classroom, as well as many other ideas and resources. $300. 2 units of graduate education credit available. - Oct. 1 - Children First: Promoting Ecological Health for the Whole Child, a one-day symposium at UCSF. Pediatric Integrative Medicine embraces a holistic, whole-child approach, specifically examining the context – the ecology – in which optimal health and wellness is promoted. This groundbreaking one-day symposium will highlight a range of interacting factors that influence child health and development, including nutrition, education, socio-economic status, exposures to toxic chemicals, and access to preventive health care.

- Oct. 12, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Active Public Spaces Convening, hosted by San Mateo County Supervisor Carole Groom. Join health officials, city staff and elected officials, school leadership and community-based organizations to learn innovative ways of increasing the use of public spaces for social connection and physical activity and to hear about local work in this area. This year's keynote speaker will be Dan Burden. Dan is an internationally recognized authority on livable and sustainable communities, traffic calming, bicycle and pedestrian mobility and Smart Growth. Additional workshops will include (invited); Safe Routes to School (including funding opportunities); Healthy Aging and Senior Mobility; HEAL Cities Campaign; Parks to Pavements; and Streetsfilms. - Oct. 23 - Sowing the Seeds of Wonder: Gardening in Early Childhood Education - Spend a day looking at the garden through the eyes of a preschool student at Life Lab's amazing Garden Classroom in Santa Cruz, CA. Sample many activities designed to encourage young children to learn about their world using all their senses. Learn how to implement garden activities in a preschool or daycare setting. We'll also discuss basic gardening skills, appropriate garden design, safe plants for preschool gardens, and garden art projects and songs. You'll receive Sowing the Seeds of Wonder, a 120-page activity guide with activities and songs for teaching preschool-aged children in a garden setting throughout the year.
